Anam’s Patent EP 215113, Method LoopDetection/Prevention for SMS Messages, granted by European Patent Office

Anam, the market leading provider of Advanced value-added SMS Services, today announced the granting of another European Patent pertinent to Anam’s core technology, the Smart Services Messaging Centre (SSMC).

European Patent EP215113 is based on a pioneering approach to storing, indexing and inspecting the delivery trail of SMS Smart Services text messages for the prevention of looping of these messages within or between operator networks.

Anam Mobile is the pioneer of the value-added SMS services market. The company provides a complete messaging services solution to mobile operators worldwide, covering core network SMS and MMS delivery platforms and additional service control products. All Anam products are designed for the modern messaging services environment to allow operators to dramatically increase usage and revenues from text messaging. Anam’s patented Smart Services Framework offers mobile operators the ability to rapidly launch new person-to-person messaging services worldwide through a flexible infrastructure that can be deployed in both GSM and CDMA networks. The framework allows operators to enrich and personalise the messaging experience for subscribers.

However, one problem that can occur when introducing new SMS Smart Services such as SMS Forwarding, SMS Copy, SMS Auto Reply; is that an excessive number of message forwarding hops can occur. This is especially true when a group of subscribers have enabled these services, it is possible for continuous looping of a forwarded message to occur. These loops cannot be detected by existing networks.

Anam solves this problem for network operators by tagging each message uniquely and/or recording delivery trail information for all Smart Services enabled messages processed by the system. The system can then prevent looping by inspecting delivery trail information associated with each received message through the management and indexing of those unique message identifiers.

It is as a result of this innovation that Anam delivers the most reliable and scalable SMS Smart Services enablement solution. The granting of this patent comes quickly on the back of Anam’s recent success in retaining their European patent, for transparent home routing, from an opposition challenge by SMSC vendor Acision.

Anam’s Patent EP 1683375, Method For Routing SMS Messages Using An Intelligent Routing Node, affirmed by European Patent Office

An attempt by Acision Nederland B.V. to have Anam’s European patent EP 1683375 relating to their Smart Services Messaging technology revoked, failed in a recent hearing before an Opposition Division of the European Patent Office.

The Opposition Division heard extensive arguments from both Acision Nederland B.V. and from Anam, who were represented by Dr Christina Gates and Dr Seán Harte of Tomkins & Co. After considering the arguments advanced by both sides the Opposition Division maintained the patent in a slightly amended form, which does not substantively change the scope of protection afforded by the patent.

This decision means that Anam’s European patent, EP 1683375 remains in force alongside U.S. patent US 800549 and their corresponding patents in other countries.

Following the decision Anam’s CEO Gerry Mc Kenna commented, “We are delighted that the decision to maintain our patent has been upheld. It is important for small research and development companies like Anam to protect their inventions and reap the full benefits of their creativity. Our intellectual property is important to Anam's future. Naturally, we are open to discussing licensing opportunities with interested parties in respect of our patent portfolio. We would also like to thank the Tomkins team for their support and professionalism during the grant and opposition process.”

Operators ready to take a bet on money transfer service

Jan 31, 2008
This will be the key year for mobile financial services. Ben Soppitt, director of the GSM Association’s mobile money transfer programme would bet his life on it. Well, he’s pretty convinced, and the broader evidence seems to back up his claims.
So how ready is the telecoms industry to take good advantage? Sadly, not as ready as it could be, in the majority of cases. This is because many players have misunderstood the opportunity.
